The 7 Things I Love Most About Being A Wedding Planner...
If you would have told me about 5 years ago that I would be a wedding planner, I would have looked at you like a crazy person. 5 years ago I was in a band, traveling, working on music and running itineraries for live shows. If you read my first blog about where it all began, you will see I got into wedding planning by accident and never looked back.
It took almost four years of blood, sweat, and tears - over 300 weddings and some serious time on my feet to get here. Now, Runway does over 150 weddings a year, we have a gorgeous office with a storefront and I have a team of 12. As we grow, I try to take on fewer weddings personally so I can focus on the business and can truly give my all to my clients. Don't let me fool you - working wedding days isn't as glamorous as you may think. On top of the 60 - 500 hours of pre wedding work, it's a wedding day of 12-18 hours, constantly being on my feet and having to make some difficult calls BUT it's all worth it.
I've been thinking about the things I love most about wedding planning and I came up with my top 7. Here we go!
- I love to make people happy.
I've always gotten so much joy out of putting a smile on peoples faces. Legit, the best moments are when I get a hug at the end of the night from my couple and they say "this was the best day EVER!". This past weekend I got a text from one of my couples saying,
"You and your team was such a dream and I literally can't imagine our wedding without you! The day was so perfect!".
That's when I literally melt inside and the fact that my knee that is killing me or that I can't feel my feet hurts a little less.
I love feeling the joy that they get out of not having to worry about a thing and can sit back, relax and truly enjoy their day. That moment where I truly help produce happiness for not only the Couple but their families.
- I love to be the boss.
Okay, this is real talk that I'm sure most people can't be honest with themselves about. ;) I love having control over situations and having the ability to make decisions in the best interest of my clients. I love taking charge and being the point of contact. I love all of it and I AM FREAKING GOOD AT IT.
- I love the before and after.
Because, well. Who doesn't!?
A few years ago, I was able to transform a church gym into a wedding venue. My couple gave me true creative control and I transformed this place like a dream. Walking into an empty space and then seeing the vision truly come to life in real time is unlike anything I have ever experienced.
I love when my Couple sees the space for the first time and their eyes light up. They truly can't believe that everything they've talked about (and let's be real - spent money on) looks even better than they envisioned.
- I love cultivating relationships.
Truly, some of my clients end up being my closest of friends. I love learning about people's backgrounds and learning culture and bonding over planning their wedding but also - more than that, being a part of their future.
I love relationships with not only my clients but my team, vendors and families. I have the opportunity to meet so many different people with so many different backgrounds that share their nuggets of wisdom and culture. Some of my greatest partnerships have been built by cultivating relationships and not being afraid to walk up to someone and say "Hi, I'm Rebekkah".
- I love creating timelines and dealing with logistics.
Yes, my Hubby thinks I'm insane. Why would anyone in their right mind want to spend hours creating timelines and thinking through every logistical piece? This is the one job that I had that I feel like I consistently have to use my brain and my decisions directly effect others - not just my Couple but all of the vendors as well. It's all about the details. Any detail I miss can directly effect the event, vendors and most importantly - my Client who has put their trust in me.
- I love that every day is not the same.
I can't even tell you how most days I wake up with a plan and it completely gets crushed and thrown in the trash. I could have a whole day planned and something happens for a wedding that weekend that I have to drop everything and fix. It's BEYOND important that I stick to my "3 things" on my to do list that HAS to be done that day and not get distracted by emails that are not a priority or chatting with my team about the weather.
That being said - every day is so different and my job is consistently evolving. I have the power to come up with new ideas and actually execute them. IT IS THE BEST.
- I love to inspire, encourage and motivate.
When I was 16 years old, I created a soccer camp for inner city kids in Flint, Michigan. I designed the logo, found sponsors and advertised the program. My first year I had 40 attendees, the second I had 80. For me, it wasn't just about teaching kids about soccer - it was about inspiring them, encouraging them that they were enough and motivating them to do more in life and to shoot for their biggest dreams.
As I grow my company, Runway Events, my goal is to inspire my team that they can be everything that they dream. It doesn't matter where you are from, what your background is, how much experience you have, what you struggle with - YOU CAN. I want to encourage others through my life - which is the main reason I started this blog. Show that even a Michigan girl that grew up with no heat most winters and sometimes no food on her table worked her ass off to be more. That is my biggest motivation.
Anyway, I hope you are inspired, encouraged and motivated by this post!
